Definition: body fat percentage is the percentage of fat your body contains. Exact percentage of body fat can not be accurately determined, however, several methods are used to estimate. These include: a formula that uses your weight in pounds and waist, with calipers to measure the thickness of the skin fold or bioelectrical impedance calculation.
Body fat is necessary for overall health. Plays an important role in protecting the internal organs, the power supply, and hormonal regulation. Excess body fat is associated with an increased risk of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
In men, a percentage of body fat of 15% to 18% body fat is to be normal; for women, 22% to 25% of normal body fat. A body fat percentage of 25% or more for men and 35% of women in the states that a person must be considered obese.
